This Week In Jams (TWIJ) is a sequenced weekly playlist featuring songs I think my friends (and future friends like you 😇) may want to hear.
I had plans, y’all. I was excited about starting my TWIJ World Tour and had the next few countries lined u——- OMG BEYONCÉ DID WHAT???
Even though it’s only been eight days since Beyoncé released “BREAK MY SOUL,” I am eternally tired with all the “house music is back!” “this is trash!” “you don’t know real house music!” conversations that have raged since last Monday.
HOUSE MUSIC NEVER LEFT! IT’S LITERALLY BEEN HERE THE WHOLE TIME! I SEE THEM AT THE COFFEE SHOP EVERY TUESDAY AND WE HAVE WONDERFUL CHATS AB—- ok, breathe, Mike.
Just like any other major music genre, house music is incredibly diverse, has been around for nearly 50 years, and (surprise!) was created by Black Chicagoans 🤷🏿♂️
It's also no surprise that this music was built and popularized by the LGBTQIA community after the "death" of disco in the late 70s. Not only was the music fire, but it also provided a safe haven for folks wanting to a temporary break from the social issues continually trying to strip their rights and erase them from existence (sound familiar?)
The first TWIJ section highlights the classic Robin S and Black Box samples Beyoncé used on her single as well as other 90s house/dance jams from Inner City, Armand Van Helden and more! The second section features nu-disco jams from Jessie Ware, Róisín Murphy, Shamir, the Scissor Sisters and the Spice Girls (because whenever you can add Spice Girls you do that).
The final section pays tribute to Big Freedia and New Orleans bounce music, which I was already planning to do this summer so thanks Beyoncé!
If you're new to this music, I hope this playlist provides a great introduction! If you're an expert, I hope you enjoy the selections I put together!
Update: If you’re seeing this post now, This Week In Jams has been refreshed. No need to fear, you can find this particular playlist here:
TWIJ PLAYLIST HIGHLIGHTS
“Everybody Everybody” - Black Box
You’ve heard this song.
"You don’t know me, Mike!”
Well, I probably do because there are like 14 people who subscribe and they are all my friends (thanks, friends)!
Just play the first two seconds.
“Let Me Know” - Róisín Murphy
Add this to the “I know I should have known about this jam, but this is why I torture myself making weekly playlists so I finally hear it” bucket.
“You’re the One (Bounce Remix)” - Magnolia Shorty
One of my favorite R&B songs of all-time gets the bounce remix treatment? You’re one step away from getting my social security number.
“Love On Top (Bounce Remix)” - Beyoncé
First, big thanks to all the streaming platforms for having soooo many bounce remixes on your platforms. Second, whyyyyyyyyy is this the ONLY one you don’t have??? I couldn’t share this heat on the official playlist, but I’m sharing it with you here.
If you’re new here…
